In an attempt to separate the man from the image, we examine Obama’s first year in office
Barrack Obama was elected as the 44th President of the United States against a backdrop of sensationalism and hysteria, due to his status and appellation as America’s first black President. Obama’s motto and selling point was change – indeed, his own story and rise reflected a massive change in American society and politics themselves. However, has Obama delivered the change he promised? One year on from the election academics, economists, politicians and observers will debate this very question in the Phil against a backdrop of heightened tensions and excitement.

DEBATING
As a society founded around the art of oratory, debating is the very essence of The Phil. It can take many different forms; from speaking in The Chamber at our Thursday evening meetings, to representing Trinity College and the Society competitively around the world. The Phil also runs tutorials, workshops and internal competitions throughout the year, to suit every appetite and ability. Even if you have never debated before, it’s easy to get involved and learn the skills of public speaking.
