A Student Society in College is a body, recognised by the College as a legitimate expression of student interest . A Society persists in time so that when the current committee has long gone from College, your Society can still operate. Societies exist because students want them to exist.
What makes each society unique in and of itself, is the fact that it has a Constitution which determines what is does and to a degree how it is to do it.
The objects of the constitution determine what societal activity consists in. Thus the Gamers society exists to promote the gaming among its members: if its officers were to stop promoting gaming and start organising fashion shows instead, they would be behaving unconstitutionally and the society’s members would be entitled to remove them from office. Similarly if the officers were to simply concentrate on organising parties or club nights, failing to pay attention to gaming they would be failing the constitution.
Admittedly many College Societies do have ‘social’ elements built into their constitutions, and this is understandable, but the societal elements must take presentence. As an officer, you have a duty of care for your society and its constitution. To learn more about constitutions see the duties of a secretary
