Classical Society

The College Classical Society is the place for all those interested in the classical worlds of Greece & Rome, whether that means reading Homer or watching 300.

With members from all over campus, we mix talks from world-renowned classicists with nights out and the best in weekly classical entertainment. So what does a 106 year old society do?

We host talks from visiting experts on the classical world, whether they hail from Trinity, Cambridge, London or New York. In addition we also hold an annual Student Colloquium, where students can broadcast their own papers on topics of interest.

We throw parties (some of a toga or costumed nature), pub nights, wine and cheese receptions, Christmas banquets and more. Last year we held our 'Imperial Ball' in conjunction with the Archaeological Society in the stunning Clontarf Castle, which was a brilliant night for all attending and the most affordable off-campus ball going.

We get out of the house. The Classical Society has organised walking tours of medieval Dublin, legendary trips to Hadrian's Wall, Pompeii, Rome and more. Feburary 2011 saw us visiting Rome and this year we’re heading to Barcelona and the ancient capital of Roman Spain, Tarragona.

In addition to all this, we host a fine library of classical scholarship. These books are situated on the 6th floor of the Arts Block and are available to all our members free of charge.
