History Society

DU History Society, currently in its 77th session, is a society run for the benefit of students interested in or studying history. DU History Society mixes academic lectures with social events, making it a friendly, engaging and informative society to be involved in.

Over the last few years, the History society has gradually grown from a small specialist society into a comfortable, fun, medium-sized society catering to all those interested in history.

Throughout the year, we hold trips, lectures and events with the goal of encouraging our members to enter into debate and discussion on historical issues. We have an event once a week, often a lecture by a guest speaker followed by a question-and-answers session and a trip to the pub, where members have an opportunity to meet the guest professor and chat with them. Previous lectures have addressed issues such as the global crime underworld, the Ku Klux Klan, and women in the French Revolution.

Other term events include history pub quizzes, fancy dress nights and trips to historical locations in Dublin. The society also embarks on history trips within Ireland and to Europe to visit beautiful historical locations throughout the year. Additionally, in Hilary term, we hold our main social event, the recently-established Apollo Ball, a black-tie event that has been hugely successful and well-attended in the last few years
