The Dublin University Mathematical Society runs weekly events for anyone with an interest in mathematics.
These include frequent talks by lecturers from inside and outside Trinity, as well as film showings, parties at Christmas and Hallowe'en and other events. We have a large room in the Hamilton for students to relax in, containing our impressive library. We also send a team to various mathematical competitions, particularly the Irish Intervarsities and the International Mathematical Competition for University Students.
We try to bring in notable speakers capable of giving interesting, informed talks about various topics in mathematics and also theoretical physics. Topics have included black holes, the mathematics of knots, sleep and juggling. In recent years we have seen visits from Physics Nobel Laureate Gerard 't Hooft of Utrecht University, Fields
Medalist Efim Zelmanov from the University of California, San Diego and speakers from universities such as Cambridge and Imperial College London.
Our talks generally take place on Wednesday or Thursday nights and are followed by a reception, which is a good way for our members to get to know each other and chat to our guests. We also hold a number of
purely social events throughout the year, the highlight being the Mathsoc-Physoc Christmas Party.
Mathsoc dates back to 1923, when it was founded by a group of students including Ernest Walton, Ireland's only Nobel Laureate in Physics.

The Mathsoc room is located in the School of Maths, down the corridor
from the School office. Having recently been renovated, it is now bigger and better than ever before and contains couches, two fireplaces and a chandelier, making it the perfect place to relax between lectures. Our library is also located there - any of our
members are free to borrow from it.
Intervarsities and IMSA
Mathsoc is responsible for training Trinity's team for the Irish
Mathematical Intervarsities. This is held each year in a different
university in Ireland, and the winning university goes on to compete
in the International Mathematics Competition for University Students.
We also attend the Irish Mathematical Students' Association Conference
each February.
